Why is Savasana the most crucial pose? 

When you’re short on time, you might be tempted to miss out on the final pose. But reconsider this, Savasana is one of the most important poses of yoga, and we’ll explain to you why. 

Rushing out of your yoga class and skipping the 10 minutes of Savasana can be a good idea, after all you want to take a shower and you’re exhausted. However, Savasana is an essential and crucial pose to yoga, there are amazing benefits to this pose. 

A great balancer 

Savasana is the great balancer in terms of our nervous system, it is a state of complete relaxation where sensory stimulation and external distractions are minimized. Over time, Savasana teaches us how we can move from anxiety to a state of peacefulness. 


Savasana increases body awareness and interoception, which is the sense of understanding and feeling what’s going on inside our body.  Interoception is associated with the autonomic nervous system and the autonomic motor control. The autonomic nervous system contains the automatic body functions like breathing, our digestive process and our heart beat. 

As such, increased interoception is linked to decreased stress and anxiousness, as well as revealing symbols of depression. 

What the science says 

Although there are not many studies looking at individual poses and their benefits for our mind and body, a study that looked at Savasana specifically is Chandra Patel’s “Yoga and Biofeedback in Hypertension”. In this study, subjects with high blood pressure practiced Savasana three times a week for a duration of 20 minutes, they received biofeedback showing them how deeply they were relaxed. They found that those who practiced Savasana regularly showed notable drops in blood pressure, proving yoga is not only beneficial for the outer core but also for the inner core.  A year later, those who had kept on training regularly maintained the low blood pressure, a cure for the patients suffering from high blood pressure! 

Lesson learned : while it seems like just a wind-down of the session, don’t skip your Savasana!
